Binnie Provides Civil Engineer Consulting for New IKEA Store in Richmond

June 28, 2010: R.F. Binnie & Associates Limited has been awarded the civil engineering contract for the new Richmond IKEA store. The new store will be situated between Jacombs Road and Knight Street, south of the existing IKEA store on Bridgeport Road.

Services provided by Binnie on this assignment include preliminary and detailed design engineering services for onsite and offsite civil works, as well as field services during construction. The project presents unique design challenges in stormwater management, and includes road and utility improvements to Sweden Way, Bridgeport Road, Jacombs Road and Knight Street. A significant benefit to visitors of the new store will be the construction of a new connector road from Knight Street to Jacombs Road, allowing IKEA traffic to bypass the Bridgeport Road and Knight Street interchange.

Senior Project Manager Tom Rabey, of Binnie’s Lower Mainland Division, has assembled a team that includes Design Engineer Gehad Ramadan, Junior Technologist Jessica Ubial, and CAD technicians Steve Jeffares and Jiang Hu. Sub-consultant DMD & Associates Ltd will provide electrical consultation for street lighting and traffic signal design.

The multi-phase project is another high profile, signature Binnie land development assignment. Anticipated for almost 10 years, the new store will replace the first IKEA constructed in Canada, which originally opened in 1982. The new store will be of the same building style as the IKEA store in Coquitlam, and slightly larger at approximately 380,000 square feet.
