Civil Engineering for Innovative VanDusen Botanical Gardens Visitor Centre by Binnie
September 1, 2010: The VanDusen Botanical Gardens upgrade is part of a $20 million improvement plan that began in 2008. The first phase includes a new 18,775 square foot visitor’s centre designed by Busby, Perkins + Will Architects. The building will strive to meet the Living Building Challenge standard, and the LEED platinum standard.
Binnie will provide the Stormwater Management Plan with features to achieve volume reduction, rate control, and to improve water quality. The onsite rainwater harvesting system employs a 125 cubic metre cistern permitting water reuse within the building. Site servicing and Erosion Sediment Control during construction will also be administered by Binnie.
The project is managed by Ken Fung, P.Eng., Senior Project Manager at Binnie. Ken is assisted on the project by Design Engineer, Geneve Lau, EIT. Completion of the project is anticipated by March 2011.
