Binnie Lead Design Consultant for Fraser Highway Design-Build Bridge Replacement at Nicomekl River

April 10, 2010: The City of Langley has awarded the $9.1 million replacement of the existing bridge on the Nicomekl River to the Tyam Group, with R.F. Binnie and Associates Limited as the lead design consultant for the successful design-build team.

The project raises the bridge above the 200 year flood elevation, and widens Fraser Highway to four lanes plus left turn lane, dedicated bike lanes, and wide sidewalks on both sides of the road. The project will be constructed in segments, allowing 2-way traffic to flow during the construction process. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 10, 2010 with City of Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender, MLA Mary Polak, MP Mark Warawa, and CEO of TransLink Ian Jarvis.

Binnie and Tyam are members of the Canadian Design Build Institute (CDBI), supporting the organization’s mission to “promote and enhance the proper utilization of the design build method of contracting.” As prime consultant, R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd. is responsible for the overall design coordination and management; quality management; roadway design; drainage design; utility design; traffic engineering; and traffic management planning. Design team subconsultants include CWMM Consulting Engineers Ltd. (structural engineering), Levelton Consultants Ltd. (geotechnical engineering), ECL Envirowest Consultants Ltd. (environmental consultants), and DMD & Associates Ltd. (electrical engineering).

As Manager of Binnie’s Project Services Division, Scott Campbell, P.Eng., PMP, leads Binnie’s involvement in this Design-Build project, with the design being carried out by Binnie’s local Fraser Valley office. The integrated project team has a history of similar past projects and the experience and skills to deliver the accelerated design schedule required to complete construction by the anticipated March 2011 deadline.
