Burnaby Lake Sports Complex Stage 3 – Site Development
Location: Burnaby, BC
Overview
Binnie was selected by the City of Burnaby in May 1997 as their Prime Consultant, Project Manager and Civil Engineer for the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. The $16 million project - including the construction of three infilled synthetic turf fields and warm-up area, extensive plaza, lighting and amenities - was completed on time and under budget.
The difficult 25-acre site posed numerous site planning, servicing, geotechnical and environmental challenges including highly variable poor soils, underlying domestic garbage, adjacent fish-bearing watercourses, wetlands, a raptor's nest, subsurface methane gas and relatively steep terrain. A G.V.S. & D.D. sanitary sewer underlain by compressible soils also traversed the site, presenting significant access and grade change concerns. Bridging over the sewer was required in order to provide access to the site and permit a staged filling program.
Environmental, economic and social sustainability were consistent core themes throughout design and construction. Water quality was enhanced and runoff volumes reduced through ground water infiltration, biofiltration, detention, planted swales and vertical field drainage systems.
Utilizing a new infilled synthetic turf system, the facility is now the largest synthetic turf installation in North America and the first of its kind in Canada. Community sports groups can now play year round on the three synthetic turf fields.
