Highway 101 Survey & Functional Design Field Road to Conveyor Belt

Location: Sechelt, BC
Overview
The District of Sechelt retained Binnie in July 2003 to conduct surveys and prepare a functional design for Sunshine Coast Highway 101 from Field Road to Conveyor Belt. The project was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Transportation.

Our services included providing detailed topographic surveys, developing a digital terrain model in CAiCE format, preparing base plans, road network analysis, providing conceptual alternatives and final development of a functional design for the approved option. We also produced a final cost estimate and drawings.

Major issues in this project included the existing sub-standard sight distances, narrow shoulders, numerous highway accesses, lack of provision for safe turning movements and the prevalence of pedestrians and cyclists on the corridor.   The highway currently has no pedestrian walkways or cyclist lanes.   In addition, the right-of-way itself was narrow and contained utility poles on each side of the roadway. We provided cost-effective improvements and solutions for this challenging assignment, to the satisfaction of the various stakeholders.
