Highway 9 Roundabout Yale Road East

Location: Rosedale, BC
Overview
The Ministry of Transportation retained Binnie to provide detailed engineering drawings and contract documents for the upgrade of the Highway 9 and Yale Road East intersection to a single lane roundabout. Highway 9 connects the Trans Canada Highway near Bridal Falls to Highway 7 near Rosedale and Harrison Hot Springs.

This project was funded by the Ministry of Transportation and ICBC. Both a traffic signal and a roundabout were evaluated. The roundabout was selected since it was found to provide increased safety and improved traffic operations.

Since this is one of the first roundabouts to be constructed on provincial highways, Binnie worked closely with the Ministry to finalize the signing and pavement markings for the roundabout.

Highway 9 carries a significant amount of truck traffic and the roundabout is designed to allow for the passage of large tractor-semitrailer trucks. We used software to model trucks traffic passing through the roundabout. Approximately 300 metres of Highway 9 was realigned to improve the road geometry at the roundabout. The scope of work also included illumination of the intersection, construction of curb, gutter and sidewalks, storm drainage and landscaping.
