In 2003, the Ministry of Transportation retained Binnie to conduct a conceptual alignment study and cost estimate for a two-lane roadway from Coquitlam/Port Moody (Anmore) to Squamish. Binnie produced a report on the Indian Arm/Stawamus River Route titled " Two Lane Conceptual Alignment Study - Indian Arm Corridor ".
In 2004, Binnie was again retained to identify and prepare a construction cost estimate for a route from the Coquitlam area to Squamish via the east side of Indian Arm connecting into the Mamquam River Valley. The southern part of this route follows the same alignment as the previous study, but the northern portion, departing at Meslilloet Creek follows the Mamquam River Valley to Squamish rather than the Stawamus River Valley. We produced a report, " Conceptual Route Alignment Study - Indian Arm/Mamquam River - Coquitlam to Squamish ", in March of 2004.
The studies focussed on minimizing construction costs while producing a safe roadway. Existing Forest Service roads were used as much as possible. The second study considered potential recreational use of the Mamquam River watershed and avoided the Stawamus River protected watershed (Squamish municipal water supply). Analysis of costs included the use of elemental parametric processes, existing aerial photography and CAiCE design software for computer modeling.
