Hammond Bay Road

Location:
Nanaimo, BC

Project entailed road widening with new bus bay, curb and sidewalk for 265m on Hammond Bay Road from Departure Bay Road intersection.  This included closing in the ditch and installing a new storm sewer and storm services; the replacement of 150m of 200mm diameter AC watermain with 250mm diameter PVC watermain; relocation of utility poles, revised grades for driveways and alignment and grading design for extensive retaining structures. Replacement of curb and sidewalk and 200m of new storm sewer were constructed on the east side of Departure Bay Road.

This project had many challenges including steep topography with driveways to high end single family residences, limited right of way on the north side, heavy traffic volumes, utility conflicts, and constructability challenges related to keeping the road open to traffic throughout construction. The scope of work included preparation of design drawings for roadworks, storm sewer and watermain as well as detailed grading for driveways and retaining structures.  Liaison with Hydro, Telus, Terasen, Regional District of Nanaimo – Sewerage District,  VIHA and the City of Nanaimo.
