Lougheed Highway – Silverdale Avenue to Nelson Street Functional Design
The project covers a 3.05 kilometre section of Lougheed Highway No. 7 in the District of Mission, extending from approximately 100 m east of Silverdale Avenue to approximately 500 m west of Nelson Street.
Moving from west to east the highway passes through a suburban residential / light industrial area for the first kilometre and then for the remaining two kilometres (“the Silverdale Flats” section) the highway is bordered on the north by agricultural land and on the south by the CP Railway.
The assignment involved a two phased approach with the first phase being a conceptual design and options evaluation exercise concentrating primarily on the environmental assessment to identify the best possible location for the new 4 lane highway alignment based heavily on reducing environmental impact but also considering drainage, geotechnical issues, property impact, constructability, utility impact, geometrics and intersection locations. Binnie also completed traffic analysis to identify operational issues including mobility, safety, and access management. Alternative options were developed, and evaluated based on analysis and a recommendation was made for the road network that will accommodate future land development and growth.
