West Park Royal
Park Royal Shopping Center in West Vancouver was the site of a major redevelopment dubbed West Park Royal. This was the one of the first developments of its kind in Canada, incorporating a "main street" concept into the mall design providing the public with a place to stroll, gather, and shop, and creating a destination point for civic activities.
The significance of the development necessitated extensive public consultation and presentation to the approving authorities before proceeding. To mitigate the effects of the stormwater from the development, Binnie designed and oversaw the construction of a significant underground detention structure.
The structure was comprised of two interconnected box culvert systems with a flow control mechanism to allow proper discharge and four access points to allow maintenance and sediment removal. Once completed, the entire detention tank was hidden under the paved parking area and landscaping.
